Dick Heinegård Travel Fellowship
Dick Heinegård, M.D., Ph.D.
Sad news reached us on May 1, 2013 that Dick Heinegård had unexpectedly passed from among us. Dick was a foremost expert on matrix biology, a preeminent biochemist and since 1983 Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at Lund University, Sweden. His unparalleled scientific contributions published in more than 300 research papers, his collaborative spirit and generous mentoring of many young colleagues formed our field and will live on.
Dick received numerous prestigious awards for his work, among them the OARSI Basic Science Award, the Steindler Award by the Orthopedic Research Society, the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Award, the Scandinavian Jahre Award, and in 2011 the OARSI Lifetime Achievement Award.
OARSI will honor his memory through the creation of The Dick Heinegård Travel Fellowship. This fellowship will allow an OARSI member to visit the laboratory of any other investigator to enhance scientific advances through national and international collaborations. Dick himself was always generous of his time and ideas and fostered scientific collaborations and friendships worldwide until the very end of his amazingly productive life.
If you wish to contribute to the creation of this fellowship, you can do so at the Heinegård Fellowship Donations Page. Unless you wish to remain anonymous, OARSI will identify the donors so that Dick's family can be informed. It will be a comfort to them and to all of us to extend his spirit among us in this way.
