As researchers, clinicians and journal editors, we rely on the published literature to inform our work. However, publications may subsequently be retracted, and these changes are not always apparent when reviewing or citing earlier research.
The Retraction Watch Database is an excellent resource for identifying retracted publications.
A database search identified ~140 publications relevant to #osteoarthritis research. To help raise awareness, we compiled a list with author names omitted so colleagues can check whether these studies appear in their reference lists or evidence syntheses.
We do not intend to highlight individual researchers or assign blame. Retractions occur for many reasons and do not necessarily imply misconduct.
Instead, this is a reminder to check publication status, particularly when preparing systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical guidelines, and original research.
We encourage colleagues to make checking for retractions a routine part of their literature review and citation practices.
