President's Message

July 2024

Dear OARSI membership,

First, I would like to thank all of the participants for their lovely contributions to the 2024 OARSI World Congress in Vienna. A tremendous amount of exciting research was presented from all fields of OA science. The conference attracted a record number of abstracts and participants from more than 50 countries!

Please make sure to hold the dates of April 24-27, 2025 for the first OARSI conference in South Korea. If possible, I recommend that you take this opportunity to spend a few extra days of vacation to experience the lovely hospitality, culture and amazing sights of the fantastic city of Seoul and its surrounding area! OARSI plans to offer an increased number of travel stipends for early career investigators to support travel to Incheon, South Korea. The Call for Abstracts will open in September.

Abstract submission deadline is November 22, 2024!

I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Gunil Im for his leadership of OARSI over the past two years, and I am humbled to take over the role as President of our society. I would also like to thank the outgoing Board of Director members, Flavia Cicuttini, Siddharth Das, Ida Haugen, and Ali Mobasheri, for their amazing contributions and welcome the new Board of Director members:

For 2025, we are particularly interested in having female applicants for OARSI Board of Director positions as unfortunately there were no female applicants for this year’s rotation. The Call for Nominations is open. Nomination deadline is August 30, 2024. Click here to begin an application.

Please consider our excellent two high-quality scientific journals to publish your work! Our Co-Editors in Chief for Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (OAC), Anne-Marie Malfait and David Hunter, and Editor in Chief for Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open (OAC Open), Henning Madry, all do truly amazing work with their editorial teams! OAC has recently received an impressive new impact factor of 7.2 (#2 in Orthopedics and 5th in Rheumatology), and OAC Open is anticipated to receive its first impact factor next year!

In the Northern Hemisphere, we are in peak Summer while our members in the Southern Hemisphere are in the mid-Winter season. For many of us, this is a time of spending extra quality time with family and friends for some vacation. Please make use of this time to get ready for an exciting year to come in OA research and activities with OARSI! We live in a world of many international political tensions and conflicts, and thus it is more important than ever to interact, meet, collaborate, and show unity and solidarity to move the field of OA science forward in good spirit!

OARSI inspires!
