Physical Performance Measures

OARSI recommended set of physical performance measures for knee and hip osteoarthritis

OARSI and OMERACT both advocate the use of core outcome measures that assess the domains of pain and function in people with OA. Both patient-reported and performance-based outcome measures have been used to assess physical function but currently there is no gold standard assessment in people with OA. Absence of a consensus about the best performance-based tests makes it difficult to select the most feasible, reliable outcome measures for clinical and research purposes, and comparing outcomes across studies is challenging.

This OARSI initiative therefore aimed to recommend a set of performance-based tests of physical function for people diagnosed with hip or knee OA, including those following joint replacement. An expert, international, multidisciplinary advisory group was selected to guide the process and a series of consensus exercises were conducted. The recommended set comprises three core tests and two additional tests. They are intended for use by both clinicians and researchers as performance outcome measures and are viewed as complementary to established self-report measures such as questionnaires.
