The Osteoarthritis Research Society International invites you to submit your research for an in-person poster presentation at the OARSI 2023 World Congress on Osteoarthritis to be held in Denver, Colorado. The submission period will close on January 18, 2023, at 11:59 pm EST.

Lifetime Achievement Award

OARSI would like to invite members to nominate an individual(s) for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award is intended to honor a person who has devoted much of their career (at least 20 years) to the advancement of the science associated with osteoarthritis. It may be in a broad area or may be in a specific area of the disease, but preferably both. For example, the broad advancement may be in the promotion and education about osteoarthritis, leadership in the field, a past leader of the society, repeated innovations that have advanced the field.  Examples of a specific arena would be epidemiology, pathology, surgery, cartilage biology, molecular biology, biomechanics. 

Deadline: January 20, 2023.

Clinical and Basic Science Research Awards

The Clinical Research and Basic Science Research Awards promote advancement and recognize excellence in research related to osteoarthritis.  This research should reflect an impactful body of work on a specific topic within the field of OA during the last five years. Award recipients will be acknowledged during the Opening Ceremony at the 2023 World Congress in March. Winners will receive an honorarium and Congress registration.

Rising Star Awards (Basic and Clinical Research)

The purpose of the Rising Star Award is to recognize excellent contributions from early and mid-career researchers within basic and clinical research in the OA field.

Eligible nominees should be OARSI members who received their terminal degree (e.g. PhD or equivalent) less than 10 years ago. Exceptions are made for leave related to career disruptions (e.g., parental or sick leave) or full-time clinical work. Board members are eligible. Previous winners are not eligible. Self-nomination is possible.

Nomination should include a letter of recommendation with an impact statement highlighting 3-5 impactful papers, where the candidate is senior author on at least one paper (up to two letters of one page each) and CV (up to three pages). There will be one award for basic research and one award for clinical research. Award recipients receive an honorarium and Congress registration. Award recipients will be acknowledged during the Opening Ceremony at the World Congress.

Call for OACO Journal Editor:

The Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) Publications Committee is inviting applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Society’s journal, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open.

The application deadline is January 15, 2022.

Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open is an international, fully peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal similar to the Society’s journal, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (OAC). OACO publishes findings from the clinical and basic sciences in all fields of research of relevance to osteoarthritis, cartilage, and intervertebral disc. It also accepts clinical study protocols and manuscripts describing the large data sets obtained from experimental or clinical studies.

Editor Term

The term for the editor of OAC Open is five years, beginning January 1, 2024 through December 31, 2028. 

Editorial Board

Manuscripts are accepted by either direct submission or by author transfer from Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.  For manuscripts submitted to Osteoarthritis and Cartilage and reviewed favorably, but not accepted, authors will have the option to transfer the paper over to Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open.  The reviews will follow the paper, which will reduce workload.

The Editorial board consists of one editor-in-chief and four associate editors with editorial support provided by the publisher, Elsevier.

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible to the OARSI Publications Committee and the OARSI Board of Directors and serves as an ex-officio member of each of these groups.  Candidates must have served (currently or in the past) as an Editor, Associate Editor, or Deputy Editor of a journal in the field. 

Criteria to be reviewed

  • Clinical and/or basic research expertise in osteoarthritis and/or cartilage biology
  • Should have some expertise in both clinical and basic research
  • Demonstrated editorial leadership abilities and ability to work effectively with authors, reviewers and publishing teams
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement initiatives that improve journal reach and standing
  • Institutional support and time availability

 Applications will be accepted through January 15 and should include:

  1. Summary of philosophy concerning its editorship, your vision for the next 5 years (limit to 2 pages).
  2. Recommendations on how you would promote the journal and encourage submissions (limit to 2 pages).
  3. Description of prior editorial experience (limit to 2 pages).
  4. CV / resume
  5. Letter from institution indicating support for your application.

Candidate applications will be reviewed by the Publications Committee. Final candidates will be interviewed by the OARSI Publications Committee chair and Board of Directors.

Call for Committee Volunteers

OARSI is now accepting applications for new committee members with terms to begin after the 2023 World Congress in March. For a list of committees and descriptions, please visit the committee webpage. If you are interested in applying to serve on a committee, please complete the short application.

OARSI’s success depends on the many volunteers who serve in leadership. Volunteering can provide professional growth and expand your network of OARSI friends and collaborators. Service to OARSI can provide leadership skills that will benefit you personally and professionally. Volunteering is also a way to give back to your field and support OARSI while meeting and working with new people.

Committee Policies and Descriptions:

  • Each committee may have up to ten members with staggered 3-year terms.
  • The chair of the committee may not be a board member, except for the nominating committee as prescribed in the bylaws (There may be certain exceptions from time to time).
  • Committee chairs select members of their committees from a pool of interested candidates and will consider geography, gender and expertise to ensure that each committee reflects the diversity of the OARSI membership.
  • Each committee will have one board member to act as the Board liaison
  • The terms of reference for each committee will be posted on the website and revised every three years.
  • Following the committee meeting at World Congress, each committee will submit plans for the upcoming year to the OARSI Board.
  • Committee members will be added to the website.

Scholarship Application Process is Open

OARSI members are invited and encouraged to apply for a 2023 Scholarship.

The purpose of the OARSI Scholarship Program is to promote enriched international and national exchange that will foster the acquisition of skills in specialized scientific methodologies, knowledge transition, and dissemination of research. The scholarship will also provide educational, networking and partnership opportunities. The scholarships will mainly support travel scholarships where the candidate will visit the host institution. Exceptions can be made for virtual scholarships. Multiple Scholarships of up to $7,000 (USD) each may be awarded.

Training Rotations: The award will support up to a six month visit for early career investigators, graduate students and fellows. Recipients are required to submit an abstract and present their work at the next OARSI World Congress.

All types of OA research are included in this program: basic, clinical, translational, and experimental.

Application Requirements:

For more detailed application instructions and ideas for how to make your application stand out, visit the Scholarships page. Before starting the application, please have the following documents ready for upload and submit in one entry. A complete application includes:

  • Letter by the candidate including a summary of project and justification of funding (one page).
  • Support letter from the host indicating support of the research plan, expected benefits and outcomes, and available resources and infrastructures that will facilitate the aims of the rotation (one page).
  • Support letter from the candidate´s supervisor at home institution explaining the benefit of the rotation for the candidate and for the collaboration (one page).
  • Short CV of the candidate (up to three pages).

 Criteria: Applications will be evaluated based on project, impact and benefit for training program for the candidate, interdisciplinary collaboration, international, national/country, and regional/state collaboration, and relevance to OARSI and osteoarthritis research. 

The candidate must be an OARSI member fulfilling the Early Career Investigator definition. An ECI must be either enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program (or equivalent education program) or must have attained their terminal degree (e.g., PhD or equivalent) less than ten years ago. Exceptions are made for leave related to career disruptions (e.g., parental or sick leave) or full-time clinical work. The individual must not hold an Associate/Full Professor (or equivalent; tenured) position. Preferably the host should be an OARSI member (exceptions may apply). The host institution must have experience in OA research or methods that can be transferred to OA research. 

Previous scholarship winners are NOT eligible to re-apply.

In Memoriam: Roy D. Altman, MD

   
   

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Roy Davis Altman, MD, on November 30, 2022.  Dr. Altman served as one of the giants in the field of osteoarthritis and was one of the founding members of what is now OARSI as well as the first editor of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, the official journal of the society.
