Member Spotlight: Amanda Nelson

This week's member spotlight is OARSI Board of Director Member, Amanda Nelson.

How long have you been a member of OARSI and why did you join?
I joined OARSI as a Rheumatology fellow in 2007. I got my first passport in 2008 to attend OARSI in Rome, where I received a Young Investigator Award and presented my abstract.  I joined OARSI on the recommendation of my mentor and long-standing OARSI mentor, Dr. Joanne Jordan. I was also a founding member of the Young Investigator Committee.

What do you enjoy most about OARSI?
It is great to know so many people who are interested in many of the same things. I have enjoyed meeting people from different disciplines, career stages, and backgrounds over the years, and have formed many productive and collaborative relationships from OARSI interactions. I enjoy seeing many of the same faces as well as many new ones at the meetings. I am honored to be joining the Board this year and look forward to contributing to the society.

Tell us a little bit about your research?
I am co-PI of the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project and of the currently enrolling Johnston County Health Study (along with co-PI Dr. Yvonne Golightly). These population-based studies of men and women with and without osteoarthritis have been invaluable to understanding prevalence, incidence, and progression of OA at multiple sites, including the knees, hips, lumbosacral spine, hands, feet, and ankles. We have added standardized knee ultrasounds in addition to multiple joint radiographs.  We have also been incorporating novel methodologies including machine learning through our NIAMS-funded Core Center for Clinical Research, where I direct the Phenotyping and Precision Medicine Resource Core. I have benefited from numerous local, national, and international collaborations over the years, including those facilitated through OARSI.

What are you most excited about for the future of OARSI?
I am excited about the continued addition of new investigators to the field, which brings new ideas and directions for us to pursue. I also think that newly developing technologies and methodologic approaches may provide insights that will directly impact and improve patient care.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am an artist (my undergraduate degree was in Studio Art), working mostly in charcoal. I also enjoy gardening and going to the beach with my family.
