This week's member spotlight is OARSI Board of Director Member, Magali Cucchiarini.

How long have you been a member of OARSI and why did you join?
I have been a member for over 18 years. I joined OARSI because it is the premier international organization for scientists and health care professionals focusing on the understanding, prevention, and treatment of OA.

What do you enjoy most about OARSI?
OARSI connects worldwide experts working in OA and supports excellent and interactive research at top-level, in a very professional and friendly manner. OARSI also promotes strong collaborations between groups. Through OARSI, I had the great opportunity to develop as a scientist thanks to many collaborators that became mentors and friends.

Tell us a little bit about your research?
Our work focuses on developing novel, effective gene-, cell-, and tissue engineering-based options to treat human OA. A particular focus of our Institute is the manipulation of clinically adapted rAAV gene therapy vectors and their application in vivo in a controlled release fashion using biocompatible materials and scaffolds such as hydrogels, as improved drug delivery systems to manage OA in individuals.

What are you most excited about for the future of OARSI?
OARSI has always been very dedicated to connecting people coming from different horizons, all converging towards one goal - understanding OA to definitely cure it - with a deep interest in promoting and supporting the future generations of researchers and clinicians via measures of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It gives a lot of hope that OARSI will reach this common goal, eventually.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Yoga, reading (I always go back to my roots: Camus, Descartes), and caring for my garden (it helps me meditate on life and work).
