Clinical Trials Symposium

OARSI hosted a Clinical Trials symposium on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, with 200 attendees!  Thank you very much to our expert panel, and to all of our attendees!  If you did not have an opportunity to participate, you can find a link to the recording on the OARSI website HERE.

Infographic Competition - Infographic for Policy Makers

OARSI would like to develop an infographic for Policy Makers. Policy Makers play a critical, influential role in crafting and enacting rules, laws, regulations, delivering guidance documents, and directing public investment in research that positively affects the lives of people with OA. The purpose of the infographic should be to convince Policy Makers that investments in OA research improve quality of life and increase productivity. This infographic will complement our previous infographic competition winner that targeted funders, researchers, patients, and health professionals. For more information, please click HERE.

Member Spotlight: Jeff Katz

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will spotlight past OARSI presidents. This week's Member Spotlight is 2017-2019 OARSI President, Jeff Katz.

How long have you been a member of OARSI and why did you join?

In 2005 I was developing an interest in OA research and attended my first OARSI meeting in Boston. I loved being at a meeting totally devoted to OA and  attended OARSI each year thereafter.

What do you enjoy most about OARSI?

I like to meet and learn from fellow scientists focused on OA. OARSI members are a special group. They have international perspectives, represent a broad range of scientific disciplines, and are fun to meet and spend time with.

Tell us a little bit about your research?

Currently, I am focused on non-pharmacologic treatment of OA and am leading two large trials of persons with OA and concomitant meniscal tear. One compares surgery with PT and is now collecting 12 year follow-up self-report and imaging data. The other is a comparison of home exercise, ambulatory PT, and sham PT.  We, and a number of other groups around the world, are trying to determine the most effective treatment approach to persons with OA and meniscal tear.

What was the biggest impact you made as OARSI President?

We launched discussion groups during my tenure; I think these have been well received. A number of dedicated Board members worked hard during those years to trim our budgets. That was not fun work, but it has helped stabilize OARSI finances.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

The pandemic has helped us all to focus on simple pleasures. I like to bike, hike, read (mostly fiction), and spend time with my wife and our one year old Springer puppy.
