While public health concerns and travel restrictions continue, the OARSI Board of Directors is seeking member input to determine participation at the OARSI World Congress scheduled in April in Berlin, Germany. Please take a few minutes to tell us about your current plans to participate in the  Congress and other in-person conferences by completing the short survey found at this link.

Your response to this survey will assist us in planning OARSI activities.

Member Spotlight: Martin van der Esch

This week's member spotlight is 2022 OARSI Program Chair, Martin van der Esch.

How long have you been a member of OARSI and why did you join?

I don't remember exactly when I became a member but that was already around 2012. Then I began to focus emphatically on problems related to osteoarthritis. The focus was primarily on epidemiology and on biomechanical abnormalities of the knee. More specifically the instability of the knee joint.

What do you enjoy most about OARSI?

OARSI feels like a family. There is support, criticism and debate: in short, a great family to hang out with.

Tell us a little bit about your research?

My research still focuses on epidemiological issues, but has a special interest in biomechanics and non-pharmacological interventions.

What are you most excited about for OARSI in 2022?

Not surprisingly, the tension is whether we will meet again in Berlin after so much time in lockdowns and restrictions. However, the program is also exciting because we will pay a lot of attention to (digital) technology in the OA research.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my spare time I try to stay in physical condition by cycling a lot (typically Dutch) and skating a lot in winter (even more typically Dutch). I also love music, like Adele’s last show: fantastic!

OARSI Live January 19 Webinar

In this webinar, we will discuss a recently published genome-wide association study, “Deciphering osteoarthritis genetics across 826,690 individuals from 9 populations” (DOI: 10.1016/j.cell.2021.07.038). The study represents the largest GWAS to date, identifying new genetic variants in both weight-bearing (knee, hip, and spine) and non-weight-bearing joints (hand, finger, and thumb). We will discuss methods, possible clinical implications, and future directions. Bring your questions and thoughts for an engaging discussion!
