Member Spotlight: Barbara Chan

This week's member spotlight is OARSI 2022 Abstract Chair, Barbara Chan.

How long have you been a member of OARSI and why did you join?

Since 2019, some of my research interests are associated with OA and I wanted to learn from the OA community, both clinical and basic aspects.

What do you enjoy most about OARSI?

Almost everything. Examples include pre-congress symposiums where I can find some specific aspects related to OA. For example, clinical trials on OA, which is new but useful to me. Balanced sessions between clinical and basic science on related topics on OA, where I can get a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of a particular aspect of OA. For example, biomechanics and rehabilitation from a clinical point of view and mechanobiology from a basic science point of view. I also enjoyed the exciting and inspiring Debate session, and the Year In Review, always as a wonderful wrap-up of the meeting. The other thing I enjoy most is meeting a lot of old and new friends and talking about science while having good food and drinks.

Tell us a little bit about your research?

The ultimate goal of my lab is to bioengineer complex tissues for the replacement of injured and defective tissues particularly those of the musculoskeletal system. I work on cell-based and biomaterial-assisted tissue engineering approaches in tissues such as cartilage, bone, intervertebral disc, and ligament. Achieving such an ultimate goal is not easy and we have been facing a lot of problems. In order to solve such problems, our lab is also keen to develop some platform technologies, examples include scaffolding technology, microfabrication, micropatterning technology, and novel biomimetic materials. Last but not the least, using the platforms we have established, we are also interested to understand the interactions between cells and their niche or microenvironment in particular the extracellular matrix and the mechanical niche, before translating this knowledge into practical strategies for tissue engineering including scaffolding and mechanical stimulation.

What are you most excited about for OARSI in 2022?

I can’t wait to catch up with old friends and know new friends in the OA community, revisit this exciting city Berlin, and enjoy the enthusiasm of talking about science, in 2022.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Sports such as table tennis, swimming, biking, and hiking. Also, reading, cooking, and playing family board games.
